Specialty Materials Testing

Concrete Thermal Resistivity Testing

Calicore and Soil Tests Laboratory provide concrete thermal resistivity testing for duct banks, cable encasement, and precast materials. Submit suitable concrete or grout specimens for rho testing, thermal conductivity reporting, and measured dry-out curves.

Service overview

A concrete thermal testing lab for duct-bank materials

Concrete thermal behavior can vary with aggregate, density, moisture, curing, temperature, and specimen preparation. Calicore documents specimen condition and tests the material at the points needed for the design decision.

Services may include as-received cores or cylinders, conditioned measurements, oven-dry endpoints, and iterative dry-out data rather than relying on a two-point assumption when the project requires a measured curve.

Duct-bank concrete rho testing

Concrete surrounds the conduits and forms part of the heat-transfer path in a duct bank. Thermal testing provides measured material data for the electrical designer and the concrete submittal. Provide the required maximum rho or minimum conductivity, units, specimen age, and moisture condition before testing.

A strength submittal does not establish thermal performance. Testing should represent the proposed mix, with documented aggregate sources, mix identification, casting, and curing information. For comparisons, use an agreed testing basis across the candidate mixes.

Third-party thermal testing for precast and production mixes

Ready-mix suppliers, precast manufacturers, and contractors can submit representative specimens for independent thermal measurements. Identify the batch and the placement or production lot so the result can be connected to the supplied material.

Qualification data and production verification serve different purposes. A new source or mix revision may require further review or testing under the project requirements. We provide the measured specimen data; the responsible reviewer decides whether it supports acceptance for the intended installation.

Step by step

How the process works

The exact scope is matched to the project, but a typical assignment follows these steps.

  1. 01

    Review the material and specimen

We confirm the mix identification, casting date, curing history, dimensions, aggregate information, and project acceptance condition before shipment or testing.

  2. 02

    Log the received condition

Each core, cylinder, or prepared specimen is measured and documented so the test result can be tied to a known condition.

  3. 03

    Measure the requested points

Testing may include an as-received result, conditioned measurements, an oven-dry endpoint, or an iterative dry-out curve with mass tracking.

  4. 04

    Issue the material data

The report provides the specimen record, test conditions, thermal results, and moisture or mass history required for the material submittal or design study.

Review criteria

What the designer or material reviewer needs

Concrete and grout results must be tied to specimen geometry, mix, curing, moisture, density, and preparation before they are applied to a full-scale duct bank or installation.

Frequently asked

Concrete Thermal Resistivity Testing questions

What specimen size is required?+

Acceptable size depends on the probe, material, aggregate size, and project method. Contact the laboratory before casting or shipping specimens.

Can existing cylinders or cores be tested?+

Often yes. Dimensions, condition, curing, and available quantity should be reviewed before testing.

Do you test concrete thermal conductivity as well as rho?+

Yes. Specify the property and units required by the project. Conductivity and resistivity reporting must refer to the same documented specimen and test condition.

Can you provide third-party concrete rho testing?+

Yes. Calicore’s Soil Tests Laboratory can test suitable submitted specimens from ready-mix or precast production, with mix and batch identification and the agreed test conditions.

What is a passing rho value for duct-bank concrete?+

There is no universal value for every project. The specification and responsible designer establish the thermal limit, units, moisture condition, test age, and required supporting data.

What to send us to begin

Send the mix designation, project thermal requirement, specimen dimensions and quantity, casting date, curing history, and report deadline. Contact the laboratory before casting new specimens so the geometry and preparation match the testing program.
