A topographic map records the elevations, terrain, and visible features needed before grading, drainage, access, utility, or septic design begins. It is an existing-condition engineering base map, not a legal boundary survey.
Calicore collects and organizes the site information needed for grading, drainage, septic, and civil drafting. The level of accuracy and feature collection is defined by the design task and permitting need.
This service is design-focused and does not establish legal boundaries. When boundary determination, monuments, easements, or a record survey are required, Calicore coordinates with a California licensed land surveyor.
Step by step
How the process works
The exact scope is matched to the project, but a typical assignment follows these steps.
01
Define the design area
We identify what will be designed and how far beyond the work area terrain, drainage, access, and tie-ins must be understood.
02
Review existing records
Available survey, parcel, utility, and prior-plan information is checked before the field collection limits are set.
03
Collect the needed features
Elevations and visible features such as roads, buildings, walls, channels, wells, and utilities are measured within the agreed area.
04
Build and check the base map
The data are organized into contours, spot elevations, mapped features, and a CAD or PDF base for the intended civil design.
Review criteria
What a reviewer or designer needs from topographic mapping
The map must cover enough of the site to support the proposed design and must identify the source and limits of the elevation and parcel information shown.
Requirements vary by city, county, special district, parcel, and project type. Calicore confirms the current requirements with the reviewing agency before finalizing the scope.
Contours, spot elevations, datum, benchmark or control, scale, and north arrow
Off-site or roadway tie-ins needed for access or drainage review
Property lines and easements traced to an accepted source, with boundary-survey work identified separately when required

Frequently asked
Topographic Mapping for Site Design questions
Is this a boundary survey?+
No. Calicore’s topographic mapping supports engineering design and does not establish property lines. Boundary surveying is coordinated with a licensed land surveyor.
Can the same field visit support a grading plan?+
Often yes. Combining field data collection with the intended civil design can reduce remobilization and missing-data issues.
