Corrosion Material Selection Support

Material-selection support connects the proposed metal, coating, concrete, or backfill to the actual exposure instead of relying on a generic corrosion label.

Service overview

What this service involves

Material selection is a project decision, not a universal ranking of metals. Calicore reviews soil and water exposure, moisture, soluble salts, electrical continuity, temperature, operating conditions, geometry, coatings, maintenance access, and the owner’s service-life or maintenance objectives.

The resulting engineering memorandum or recommendation report can compare alternatives, identify data gaps, and explain where isolation, drainage, coatings, monitoring, additional testing, or coordination with a cathodic-protection designer should be considered. It does not replace a complete project design or product qualification program.

Step by step

How the process works

The exact scope is matched to the project, but a typical assignment follows these steps.

  1. 01

    Define the question

We identify the asset, observed condition, available history, and the decision the work must support.

  2. 02

    Collect useful evidence

We review records and select site observations, measurements, or samples that can distinguish between credible explanations.

  3. 03

    Explain the findings

The report separates observations from interpretation and states the limitations, likely mechanisms, and next useful action.

What the owner or project team needs from the work

A useful corrosion deliverable must show how the evidence supports the conclusion, not simply assign a broad corrosivity label.

What you receive

Typical project deliverables

  • Exposure and materials review
  • Data-gap and additional-testing recommendations
  • Material, coating, or backfill comparison
  • Engineering memorandum with limitations and next steps

Common project needs

When this service is useful

  • New buried utilities
  • Tank and piping rehabilitation
  • Imported backfill evaluation
  • Design teams comparing corrosion-control options

Frequently asked

Corrosion Material Selection Support questions

Can soil resistivity alone select the right material?+

No. Resistivity is one input. Chemistry, moisture, oxygen conditions, material, coatings, electrical continuity, geometry, and operating conditions can change the selection decision.

Can you recommend a coating system?+

Calicore can evaluate coating considerations within the agreed scope and coordinate with the owner, coating specialist, or manufacturer. Product selection must follow the project specifications, exposure, and responsible design requirements.

Will the report guarantee service life?+

No. The report identifies supported comparisons, assumptions, uncertainty, and monitoring or maintenance needs rather than promising a precise service life from limited data.
