Specialty Materials Testing

Installed Thermal Backfill Field Testing

Installed-backfill testing evaluates selected material after placement, documenting the actual location and current condition rather than relying only on a preconstruction supplier sample.

Service overview

What this service involves

Before mobilization, Calicore reviews the approved backfill, qualification results, placement records, target density and moisture, duct-bank or cable geometry, and the question the field check must answer. Test locations are chosen around representative placements, source changes, nonconforming density or moisture records, or critical sections identified by the project team.

Field access is coordinated so the probe can contact suitable material without creating an uncontrolled air gap or testing a disturbed exposed crust. Calicore documents the access, depth, placement zone, current temperature and moisture context, then collects repeat measurements and representative samples where laboratory confirmation is part of the scope.

The field result is compared with the qualified material and documented placement condition. Because a current in-place point is not the same as a controlled dry-out curve, the report explains what can be concluded from the comparison and which questions still require laboratory conditioning or designer review.

Step by step

How the process works

The exact scope is matched to the project, but a typical assignment follows these steps.

  1. 01

    Review qualification and placement

We collect the approved source or mix, qualification curve, target condition, placement records, and the specific concern that prompted field verification.

  2. 02

    Choose accessible comparison points

Locations are coordinated around representative work, source or batch changes, density or moisture concerns, and thermally important installation sections.

  3. 03

    Measure and sample

The installed material is accessed without relying on an uncontrolled surface crust or air gap; in-place readings, conditions, repeat data, and related samples are documented.

  4. 04

    Compare with the project basis

The report compares the current field condition with qualification data, states the limitations, and identifies whether laboratory conditioning or designer review is still needed.

Review criteria

What field verification can and cannot establish

A selected field point documents the installed material at the time of testing. It does not by itself prove every placement or predict the complete long-term moisture response.

What you receive

Typical project deliverables

  • Field-verification location plan
  • In-place thermal measurements and observations
  • Backfill sample and placement traceability
  • Comparison with qualification data and stated limitations

Common project needs

When this service is useful

  • Thermal sand and compacted backfill
  • Data center and substation duct banks
  • Source or placement changes
  • Investigation of unexpected thermal test results

Frequently asked

Installed Thermal Backfill Field Testing questions

Can field testing prove long-term backfill performance?+

It documents the selected installed locations at their current condition. Long-term moisture-dependent behavior is better evaluated with a laboratory dry-out curve and the project designer’s service-condition assumptions.

Can you test through a permanent sleeve?+

Probe access and contact must be reviewed carefully. An uncontrolled sleeve or annular gap can influence the measured response, so the access method is established before testing.

Can field verification be combined with density testing?+

Yes, when the responsibilities, methods, and locations are coordinated. Density and moisture context can help compare installed material with its laboratory qualification condition.
