Specialty Materials Testing

Soil Sieve Analysis

Soil sieve analysis separates a representative sample into particle-size ranges and reports the percentages of gravel, sand, and material passing selected sieves.

Service overview

What this service involves

Calicore performs sieve analysis using a project-appropriate sequence and reports retained and passing percentages. Results can support soil classification, septic evaluation, backfill review, field investigations, and civil reports.

Testing can be combined with moisture content, Atterberg limits, compaction testing, or corrosion and thermal measurements to create a coordinated material-data package.

Step by step

How the process works

The exact scope is matched to the project, but a typical assignment follows these steps.

  1. 01

    Confirm the required gradation

We review the intended use, governing specification, maximum particle size, required sieve series, and whether wash-fines or finer-particle testing is needed.

  2. 02

    Prepare a representative specimen

The submitted material is reduced and prepared so the tested portion reasonably represents the bulk sample.

  3. 03

    Separate and weigh the fractions

The specimen is washed when required, dried, passed through the selected sieve stack, and weighed on each sieve.

  4. 04

    Calculate and plot the results

Percent retained and passing are reported in a table and particle-size distribution curve, with classification support when enough companion data are available.

Review criteria

What the designer, contractor, or reviewer needs from sieve analysis

The report should show the actual gradation without implying that particle-size distribution also measures strength, permeability, compaction, or septic infiltration.

Frequently asked

Soil Sieve Analysis questions

Which sieve sizes are used?+

The sequence is selected for the required standard, material, maximum particle size, and classification objective. Provide the governing specification when one applies.

Can you classify the soil from the results?+

Yes, when the necessary gradation and plasticity information is available and classification is included in the scope.
