Wenner four-pin soil resistivity testing in Shreveport, LA

Shreveport has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers, periodic drought, and large river-driven moisture contrasts.

Local planning context

What the regional setting changes—and what it does not

Red River alluvium and terraces, sand, silt, clay, and urban or industrial fill can change across the city.

That context helps a Shreveport project team select stations, line directions, and electrode spacings. It does not establish a parcel-wide electrical resistivity or a corrosion rate. Each result belongs to the documented array and field condition.

Evidence to action

A Shreveport testing plan should connect local conditions to field decisions.

Regional maps and climate records are reconnaissance tools. The project plan still has to represent the actual alignment, earthwork, materials, and construction stage.

01

Season and moisture

Shreveport has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers, periodic drought, and large river-driven moisture contrasts.

Record rainfall, irrigation, surface moisture, frost, and construction condition at each station.
02

Ground and earthwork

Red River alluvium and terraces, sand, silt, clay, and urban or industrial fill can change across the city.

Separate native ground, cuts, fills, and materially different route segments in the station plan.
03

Infrastructure

Healthcare, manufacturing, river logistics, substations, pipelines, and municipal utilities create diverse work.

Tie each array to the substation, collector system, route, facility, or buried asset it is intended to inform.
04

Access and interference

Levees, floodplain access, rail, pipelines, and industrial properties shape both sampling and long-array layouts.

Reserve straight, utility-cleared lines and document conductive features that cannot be avoided.

Array to dataset

How a Wenner four-pin survey works

Four electrodes are placed in a straight line at equal spacing. The instrument introduces current through the two outer electrodes and measures voltage between the two inner electrodes. The measured resistance and array geometry are used to calculate apparent soil electrical resistivity.

The crew repeats readings at planned spacings, stations, and orientations. Increasing spacing samples a larger earth volume, but spacing is not an exact depth. Layered ground, buried metal, grounding conductors, overhead lines, limited geometry, contact resistance, and electrical noise can affect the response.

Calicore reports station coordinates, alignment, spacing, measured resistance, calculated apparent resistivity, units, current field condition, photographs, deviations, and limitations. ASTM G57-20 and IEEE 81-2025 are common technical starting points; the project specification and receiving engineer control the final scope.

Looking for thermal soil resistivity instead?

Wenner testing measures apparent electrical resistivity for grounding and corrosion work. Thermal resistivity describes resistance to heat flow around buried power systems.

Frequently asked

Shreveport project questions

Is there a typical soil electrical resistivity for Shreveport?+

No defensible parcel or route value comes from the city name. Red River alluvium and terraces, sand, silt, clay, and urban or industrial fill can change across the city. A Wenner survey measures apparent resistivity for the documented array, location, spacing, orientation, and field condition.

How are Wenner electrode spacings selected for a Shreveport project?+

The receiving grounding or corrosion engineer's objective, desired earth-model coverage, site dimensions, anticipated layering, and interference constraints determine the spacing sequence. Spacing is not treated as an exact one-to-one test depth.

What can make Wenner testing difficult in Shreveport?+

Levees, floodplain access, rail, pipelines, and industrial properties shape both sampling and long-array layouts. Candidate lines, utility clearance, access, surface conditions, buried metal, overhead conductors, grounding systems, and work windows should be reviewed before mobilization.

Which Shreveport projects use soil resistivity surveys?+

Healthcare, manufacturing, river logistics, substations, pipelines, and municipal utilities create diverse work. Common survey uses include pipeline corrosion surveys, industrial grounding studies, utility-substation profiling. The data can support a grounding or corrosion evaluation but is not itself a grounding-grid or cathodic-protection design.
