Wenner four-pin soil resistivity testing in McAllen–Edinburg–Mission

Field measurements for grounding studies, substations, solar and battery facilities, transmission, utilities, buried assets, and corrosion evaluations.

Regional planning context

Why the earth profile has to be measured at the project

Lower Rio Grande Valley sites can contain fine-grained alluvium, clay, silt, irrigation-influenced ground, and localized saline conditions. Extended heat makes current moisture and seasonal surface condition important at each station.

Regional descriptions help identify station coverage, candidate line directions, and likely changes along an alignment. They do not provide a design resistivity for a parcel or route. A Wenner result is apparent soil electrical resistivity for the documented array and field condition.

Field method

What the Wenner array measures

Four small electrodes are installed in a straight line at equal spacing. The instrument sends current through the outer pair and measures voltage between the inner pair. Measured resistance and array geometry are used to calculate apparent soil electrical resistivity.

Readings are repeated at a planned spacing sequence and, when needed, at multiple locations or orientations. Larger spacing investigates a larger earth volume, while changes in the apparent-resistivity curve can indicate nonuniform ground that the grounding engineer may model as layers.

The method records the earth response; it does not by itself select a ground grid, predict touch and step voltage, establish corrosion rate, or design cathodic protection. Those decisions use the field dataset together with the asset geometry and governing design method.

Station to report

How a field survey is completed

A useful dataset begins before the first electrode is driven.

  1. 01

    Define the use

Identify the grounding, corrosion, route-comparison, investigation, or owner requirement and the engineer who will receive the data.

  2. 02

    Plan stations and spacings

Overlay the facility, grading, utilities, buried metal, overhead conductors, access, terrain, and candidate straight corridors.

  3. 03

Clear and lay out each line

Confirm utility clearance, station coordinates, orientation, surface condition, line length, and deviations before installing electrodes.

  4. 04

    Measure and repeat

Collect resistance readings at the planned equal spacings, verify units and connections, repeat questionable points, and document noise or contact problems.

  5. 05

    Issue traceable data

Report raw readings, calculated apparent resistivity, locations, alignment, spacing, field condition, photographs, deviations, and limitations.

Frequently asked

McAllen–Edinburg–Mission Wenner testing questions

Is there a typical soil resistivity for McAllen–Edinburg–Mission?+

No citywide value can represent a parcel, substation, route, or facility. Lower Rio Grande Valley sites can contain fine-grained alluvium, clay, silt, irrigation-influenced ground, and localized saline conditions. Extended heat makes current moisture and seasonal surface condition important at each station. Field measurements must be tied to the actual array, location, spacing, orientation, and current condition.

Does Wenner electrode spacing equal test depth?+

No. Larger spacing generally samples a larger earth volume, but spacing is not an exact one-to-one depth. Layering, array geometry, site boundaries, and conductive features affect the apparent response.

What information is needed to scope a McAllen–Edinburg–Mission survey?+

Send the site plan, survey objective, grounding or corrosion design request, proposed stations and spacings, final grading information, candidate line corridors, utility-clearance responsibility, access rules, schedule, and required report format.

Can Calicore mobilize outside California?+

Yes. Calicore performs project-based Wenner field programs throughout the United States when the station count, spacing, access, schedule, and mobilization are practical.
